A few crashes & a hijack
While Air India is facing the heat over emergency landings, the other aviation industry veteran Indian had to go through turbulence on several occasions due to tragic crashes.
Some of the crises faced by Indian, which at one time dominated the country’s skies with sister carrier AI donning the international cap:
April 26, 1993: A B737-200 of the airline strayed and hit a large vehicle on a road just outside the airport in Aurangabad, killing 56 passengers, including four members of the cabin crew.
August 4, 1979: A HS-748 collided with high ground due to poor visibility, about 10 km from the Mumbai airport, killing 45.
December 24, 1999: Taliban hijacked an Indian (then Indian Airlines) flight from Kathmandu and took it to Kandahar. After the hijack, the flight first landed at Amritsar, but was allowed to take off to secure the lives of the passengers. While the militants killed one passenger, others were released after the government met their demands which included the release of a Pakistani militant jailed in Kashmir.
After the Bangalore crash, Indian’s entire A320 fleet was grounded, but the airline is now banking on this aircraft type to add muscle to its operations. The government has also accepted the folly by granting compensation to Indian for the grounding.
