63,000 flights cancelled in Europe since Thursday because of a huge cloud of ash from a volcano erupting in Iceland.

BRUSSELS: About 63,000 flights have been cancelled in Europe since Thursday because of a huge cloud of ash from a volcano erupting in Iceland, the European air traffic coordinating agency said.

Some 20,000 flights were cancelled on Sunday alone, according to a midday count, the Eurocontrol agency said.

"On a normal Sunday, close to 24,000 (flight) movements are recorded. At the end of the day, we will have had only 4,000 movements," it said.
