Mobile operators have earned more than Rs 8,000 crore from selling caller tunes and ringtones in the last three years. But these revenues may begin to slide once Trai strictly enforces its rules making prior user sanction mandatory for activating these value-added services.

Trai rules say service providers must obtain confirmation through an SMS, e-mail, a fax or in writing within 24 hours of activation. Subscribers must be informed three days before renewal of any value-added service.
