WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a wireless standard for broadband internet capable of data speeds of 10mbps up to 2km from a radio transmitter.

It is 30 times faster than 3G mobile technology, and 100 times faster than the wireless data rates offered by cellular cos. 3G networks promise data througout of 2mbps. Its name was coined by WiMAX Forum which was formed to promote conformance and interoperability of the standard.
