Videocon applies for mobile licenses; Omaxe may also join
The rush of corporate houses seeking telecom licences continued today with consumer durables major Videocon joining the fray, while real estate firm Omaxe planning to venture into the high-growth sector.
"We have applied for mobile licenses in all 22 circles," Videocon Chairman Venugopal Dhoot told PTI.
"We are in talks with a global company for partnership in our telecom venture... Videocon would be a majority partner in it," Dhoot added.
Although he declined to comment on reports that Videocon would be partnering with Verizon, sources said it could partner the US firm for the mobile telephony business.
Videocon joins other corporates such as Unitech, DLF, Parsvnath and Indiabulls Real Estate among others, who are submitting licence applications to the Department of Telecom before the October 1 deadline.
Another real estate company Omaxe is also considering to join the telecom bandwagon.
"We are exploring the possibility of foraying into the telecom sector," company sources said, adding that a final decision has not been taken.
A DoT official said the company had inquired about general information on the telecom licences.
About 160 applications are already pending with DoT for permission to operate in the world's fastest growing telecom market which is adding over seven million users every month.
The DoT has said it will not accept licence applications after October 1 and will form new norms to screen applicants in view of the spectrum shortage.
