TRAI to submit suggestions on rural telephony to DoT by nxt wk
Telecom regulator Trai on Thursday said it would submit the report on rural telephony to the Department of Telecom by next week.
"By Monday, we should be able to send recommendations (on rural telephony), a new set of recommendations, to the Department of Telecom on the next 100 million (rural customers)," Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Chairman Nripendra Misra told reporters here.
He, however, declined to disclose the details of the recommendations.
"Our main focus today is the next 100 million (customers) from rural areas," Misra said.
Stressing the need for expanding telephone connectivity in rural areas, he said, "In Hyderabad, many people will have two phones. In Delhi, 60 per cent have two handsets. But that is not India".
Asked how much of India is covered by broadband services, Misra said, "How much, you cannot say. About 5.20 million broadband connections have been given. I have no hesitation in confessing that it is a poor achievement for the size of the country".
