TRAI to 'revisit' consultation paper on IPTV
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will 'revisit' the consultation paper on IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) to examine the legal changes which might be required, TRAI Chairman Nripendra Misra said on Monday.

CHENNAI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will 'revisit' the consultation paper on IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) to examine the legal changes which might be required, TRAI Chairman Nripendra Misra said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Telecommunications (APT) and ICT Development Forum (ADF) here, Misra said TRAI has sought the opinion of stakeholders on the legal changes which might be required, either in the Indian Telegraph Act or the Cable TV Act with respect to IPTV. This would in no way affect the scheduled roll out of IPTV, he said.
"Possibly the paper needs to be revisited regarding both access and content. We will be seeking the comments of cable associations, broadcasters, telecom service providers, ISP's apart from NGO's who are interested," he said.
Earlier, addressing the Forum, Misra dubbed the Indian telecom sector as the "Poster Child" of development in India.
"One of the reasons for the success story in India is that we did not wait for the demand from the market. Instead, we created the supply, which in turn created the demand. Such was the supply that the demand followed it," Misra said.

Speaking on Convergence of content and carriage, he said, it is a technical necessity, a technical truth. We cannot postpone it." A K Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director BSNL, said new technologies in the telecom sector have the potential to empower citizens with greater access to education, health, trade, commerce and governance.
"Absence of reliable and proven wireless technologies till recent times for broadband applications has also made it difficult to take full advantage of IT enabled services to rural areas. It is expected that new technologies like WiMax will help bridge the gap," he said.
