TRAI tells cable subscribers to apply for set top boxes

It has also issued a series of advertisements aimed at educating the cable TV subscribers.

NEW DELHI: Broadcast regulator TRAI on Friday asked cable TV subscribers to apply immediately to cable and Multi Service Operators of their area for set top boxes, failing which they would be denied viewing of pay channels on their TV after December 31.
"Waiting till the last moment would lead to bunching of applications on 31st December, which the MSOs/Cable operators would find difficult to handle. It means subscribers will be able to watch only free to air channels and will be denied popular pay channels of their choice till set top box is installed," TRAI said in a statement.
It also said there is no proposal under consideration for postponement of CAS beyond the notified date of 31st December, which is the date mandated by the Delhi High Court.
The government has already approved 26 MSOs for providing cable TV services in CAS notified areas either directly or through local cable operators, the statement said.
TRAI has also placed the required regulatory framework by issuing tariff orders for pay channels, free to air channels and set top boxes, regulations for interconnection agreements among the broadcasters, MSOs and cable operators, it said.
It has also issued a series of advertisements aimed at educating the cable TV subscribers. The meetings have been held in Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai with the consumer action groups and the meeting for Mumbai will be held on December 16, it added.
