TRAI seeks stakeholders views on mobile TV issues
Seeking to evolve a consensus on the mobile television service, the telecom regulator TRAI on Tuesday sought the views of stakeholders on the issues arising out of this latest form of television, which uses both broadcast and telecom services.
In a consultation paper released on Tuesday, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India drew attention to the specific issues such as prevailing international practices in mobile TV service, eligibility criteria, net-worth requirement, and levels of FDI (foreign direct investment).
TRAI has also sought views on technologies to be adopted, revenue sharing, entry fees and bank guarantee and use of spectrum in the launch of mobile TV service.
The stakeholders have been asked to submit their views by September 30.
After public broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) launched DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast on Handheld devices), or "Mobile TV", early this year, the Information and Broadcasting ministry had sought the TRAI's recommendations on the various issues pertaining to the new service.
Unlike mobile phone service providers who use wireless telecom network, DD is using its terrestrial broadcast transmitters for providing mobile TV service.
