TRAI orders telcos to submit certificate of compliance

Telecom regulator TRAI on Friday directed all telecom service providers to submit a "certificate of compliance" on tariff-related instructions issued by it.

NEW DELHI: Telecom regulator TRAI on Friday directed all telecom service providers to submit a "certificate of compliance" on tariff-related instructions issued by it.

The certificate should indicate that all the issued directions are being complied by them continuously and there has been no breach of these directions during the year.

The first such certificate has to be submitted by August 31, 2006, for the period till June 30, it said.

The directions prohibit cellular service providers from levying migration charges and offering tariff plans with misleading titles.

It also includes prompt refund of security deposit to the customers within a prescribed period and prescription of format for publication of tariff for consumer information.

The directives make it mandatory for service operators to inform credit limit for post-paid customers in writing besides other things.

This decision by TRAI is expected to lead to better implementation of the various consumer protection measures by the telecom operators.
