Telecom service providers, in the last two weeks, have blacklisted over 50 entities, and disconnected more than 2.75 lakh mobile numbers and telecom resources after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) cracked down hard on spam calls and messages.

"These steps are expected to have a significant impact on reducing spam calls and providing relief to consumers. TRAI urges all stakeholders to comply with the directives and contribute to a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem," Trai said.

The regulator had issued stringent directives to telecom access providers on August 13, mandating them to immediately stop promotional voice calls from unregistered telemarketers using telecom resources.

The regulator also issued a warning to unregistered telemarketers found to be misusing telecom resources of disconnection of resources of up to two years and blacklisting.

The directives came after the regulator received over 7.9 lakh complaints against unregistered telemarketers in the first half of 2024.
