Trai secretary Sunil Gupta gets two-month extension till May-end

Gupta had taken over as Trai secretary in September 2017 shortly after his predecessor Sudhir Gupta retired in July that year.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) secretary Sunil Gupta has been granted a two-month extension till May 31, 2021, according to a communications ministry circular issued Thursday.

“…approval of the competent authority for extension of the deputation tenure of Trai secretary Sunil Gupta has been granted for a further period of two months,” the ministry said in a circular.

Gupta had taken over as Trai secretary in September 2017 shortly after his predecessor Sudhir Gupta retired in July that year. Before his current role, he was principal advisor (broadcasting & cable services) at Trai.


A gold medallist from Allahabad University, the present Trai secretary joined the Indian Telecom Services (ITS) in 1983 and previously worked in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

An industry veteran, Gupta has been reportedly involved in matters pertaining to telecom licencing, regulations and implementation and his . His work spans a range of issues across broadband, FM radio, cable TV services, infrastructure sharing and IP addresses.
