The Department of Consumer Affairs has formed a committee to set a timeline for the adoption of USB Type-C as the standard charging port for electronic products, including smartphones, tablets and laptops, said a senior official.

The committee will be headed by Nidhi Khare, additional secretary at the department, and will have some IIT professors as members.

The committee will hold its first meeting in the coming week to formulate an action plan for the adoption of USB Type-C as the universal charger, the official added.

Earlier this month, mobile device makers and associations representing technology companies in India agreed to adopt USB Type-C as the standard charging port. While more than 98% of Android smartphones use USB Type-C as the charging port, Apple's iPhones rely on its proprietary lightning port.
