The initiative aims to enhance road safety by providing timely information to highway users, enabling them to adjust speed and driving behaviour. Alerts will be sent via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls. The system will be gradually integrated with NHAI’s digital platforms, including the Rajmargyatra mobile app and emergency helpline number 1033.
According to NHAI, the automated system will function for all Jio users travelling on or near national highways. It will use existing telecom towers, allowing quick deployment without the need for roadside hardware. The partnership leverages Jio’s digital infrastructure, which serves over 500 million subscribers nationwide.
“This initiative marks an important step forward in providing timely and reliable information to commuters, enabling them to make informed decisions and adopt safer driving practices well in advance. I am sure that this initiative will set a new benchmark in technology-enabled road safety management on National Highway,” NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said.
Reliance Jio President Jyotindra Thacker said that the initiative uses the reach of Jio’s network to deliver safety alerts at scale, contributing to safer and more informed highway travel.
A pilot deployment will begin under select NHAI regional offices to identify risk zones and define alert parameters. The project will comply with regulatory and data-protection norms. NHAI plans to extend similar collaborations with other telecom service providers to ensure wider coverage. By combining digital infrastructure with real-time communication, the authority aims to improve commuter awareness and reduce preventable road incidents across India’s highway network.
