Telcos refund Rs 2.3 cr of CLIP charges to subscribers
Following TRAI's direction on making the Caller Line Identification Presentation an optional facility, telecom service providers have refunded more than Rs two crore to subscribers.
The amount was charged for CLIP, which was provided as a compulsory service.
The sector regulator today said the service providers have refunded Rs 2.30 crore of CLIP charges levied after September 7, 2007 to about 1.96 lakh subscribers.
TRAI had last year directed telecom operators not to make CLIP facility compulsory, and to be transparent in charging for the facility. The direction had become effective from September 7 last year.
The CLIP facility enables subscribers to know the telephone number of the calling party.
TRAI had said that if a service provider wants to charge for CLIP, it could be levied on only those subscribers who want to avail the facility and only after obtaining their explicit consent.
Some service providers sought extension of time for re-structuring the existing tariff plans (where CLIP was a mandatory item of tariff) so as to make the facility optional.
Their request was accepted by TRAI subject to the condition that no customer would be charged for CLIP as a compulsory item of tariff after September 7. It also stated that if a customer is charged for CLIP as a compulsory item, the same had to be refunded.
