Telcos can provide services up to 500 mts from border
The ministry of communications and IT has set a target of 9 million broadband connections by the yearend and 20 million high-speed internet connections by the end of 2010. Currently, India has just over 2 million broadband users.
The government on Thursday also allowed telecom companies to provide mobile services up to 500 meters from international borders against 10 kms earlier except along the Line of Control and Line of Actual Control in the areas of Akhnoor and Pathankot of J&K . Both announcements were made by Minister for Communication and IT Dayanidhi Maran while addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his ministry in Delhi on Thursday.
According to Mr Maran, the advent of WiMax would add more than a million broadband connection per month by 2007-end . Special emphasis will be on North-Eastern states and Jammu & Kashmir, he said adding that BSNL has declared 2007 as the year of North East and Jammu & Kashmir with an objective to improve teleconnectivity in these states.
Outlining the action plan to improve broadband penetration in the country, Mr Maran said the facility would be provided to all secondary and higher secondary schools, public health care centres and village panchayats by 2008.
“BSNL, as part of the action plan, will add an average of 5 lakh broadband connections per month from January 2008, while MTNL has set a target of 1 million broadband connections by 2007-end , in addition to an average one lakh connections per month from January 2008,” said Mr Maran.
With regard to allowing cellular companies to launch services within 500 mts from the international border, the Department of Telecom in its notification has said that operators will have to install requisite technologies to ensure that the signals cannot be used beyond 500 metres from the international boundary. However, along the actual Line of Control, Line of Actual Control and in Akhnoor and Pathankot areas in Jammu & Kashmir, operators will be required to create a buffer zone of 10 kms.
