Tata Teleservices gets spectrum nod for three circles

Tata Teleservices has received spectrum in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and North-East circles, making it a pan-India operator.

MUMBAI: Tata Teleservices (TTSL) has received spectrum in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Assam and North-East circles, making it a pan-India operator.

The CDMA telecom arm of the Tatas was allocated 2.5 Mhz start-up spectrum in each of the three circles on Friday, sources at Department of Telecom said.

Shyam-Sistema, a joint venture between Shyam Telelink and Russias Sistema, has also received 2.5 Mhz in these three circles. Shyam Telelink is expected to receive spectrum in five more circles very soon, said sources.

TTSL is likely to begin services in the new circles in the next six-nine months, added sources. Till now, Reliance Communications was the only CDMA operator with a pan-India footprint.

TTSL, with 25-million subscribers, is the fastest growing service provider. According to a report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), TTSLs market share increased to 9.7% in March 2007 from 3.5% in March 2004.

TTSL is also in queue for GSM spectrum under the dual technology policy. It has applied for GSM spectrum in all the 23 telecom circles. The much-awaited process of spectrum allocation began on Thursday and more operators are expected to receive spectrum in the days ahead.
