Tata International launches mobile telephone services in Johannesburg
Indian multi-national firm Tata International has launched its mobile telephone services through its company Neotel in Johannesburg.
Mukul Sharma, Executive Head of Neotel's consumer business unit, announced in Johannesburg that the NeoConnect packages were built around a handset that plugged into a computer and served as a telephone as well as a wireless internet access point.
He said although the handset could be used purely as a cordless phone for anyone who did not want internet access, the monthly fee would not be economical for only making voice calls.
"It isn't attractive for someone who doesn't want data", Sharma said, adding "we are also looking at whether we should have voice - or data - only packages."
"This is just the start to serve individual customers", he said. Mr Sharma said Neotel hoped to sign up 50,000 to 60,000 consumers within nine months. Neotel CEO Ajay Pandey said so far the company's target customers live in the Johannesburg-Pretoria region.
"Internet users in Cape Town and Durban will be covered within the next few weeks. Our network coverage for consumers should almost double within a month", he said. Mr Pandey disclosed that about USD 1.3 billion had been budgeted for infrastructure over the next decade.
