LONDON: Vodafone Group has inducted Simon Murray as a Non-Executive Director on the board, replacing Lord Broers, who will retire from the board after the company's AGM in July.
Simon Murray is an old Asia hand and has held positions with Jardine Matheson, Deutsche Bank and Hutchison Whampoa where, as Group Managing Director, he oversaw the development and launch of mobile telecommunications networks in many parts of the world. Vodafone recently completed the acquisition of a controlling stake in the Indian business of Hutch.
Mr Murray is also on the board of Cheung Kong, Compagnie Financière Richemont and Macquarie (HK) Limited and is an Advisory Board Member of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation.
Sir John Bond, chairman of Vodafone said in the announcement, "I am delighted to welcome Simon Murray to the Vodafone Board. His considerable knowledge of mobile telecommunications and his entrepreneurial spirit, coupled with his vast experience of the Asia-Pacific region, will be a great asset to the company. I am looking forward to his contribution and to working with him."
Alec Broers has served as a Non-Executive Director for over nine years and has also made a substantial contribution as a long-serving member of our Audit Committee and Nominations & Governance Committee and as Chairman of Vodafone's UK pension trustee company.
In a separate development, the company today denied media reports in New Zealand that it was looking to exit its Australasia business.
New Zealand media reports said, citing un-named sources, that with tightening regulatory environment, Vodafone was looking to sell out either to Telstra or Singtel in New Zealand, as it was struggling to gain dominance in the market.
The Australian media, however, is rife with speculation and quoted unnamed analysts as saying "It's a possibility."
