RCom to start GSM services within year of receiving spectrum

Reliance Communications Chairman Anil Ambani says his company will roll out GSM services within a year of receiving spectrum.

NEW DELHI: Reliance Communications, the country's second-biggest telecom firm by market value, will launch GSM-based mobile services across the country within a year of receiving spectrum.

"We have applied for GSM spectrum for all 22 circles... as soon as we get frequency, within a year from that we will start GSM services," RCom Chairman Anil Ambani told the media on Wednesday.

The government had recently announced new norms for telecom sector, including use of dual technology by a single operator and enhanced subscriber base for allotment of additional spectrum. Within hours of this announcement, RCoM had paid the license fee of Rs 1,651 crore on October 19 and applied for spectrum.

RCom's entry into GSM operations would intensify competition and make mobile services more affordable, the company had said after receiving the approval for launching GSM services.

"The acceptance by DoT of telecom regulator TRAI's recommendations of the enhanced subscribers-linked criteria for spectrum allocation will ensure the much-needed spectral efficiency and a greater competitive environment," it said.

The Unified Service Access Licenses are technology neutral and the grant of approval of RCom for offering GSM services reaffirms company's stand, it added.
