RCOM hits back at GSM mobile firms

Anil Ambani Group firm Reliance Communications on Thursday hit back at GSM mobile operators lobby, saying the Cellular Operators Association of India was trying to stall reforms and new entrants in the telecom sector.

NEW DELHI: Anil Ambani Group firm Reliance Communications on Thursday hit back at GSM mobile operators lobby, saying the Cellular Operators Association of India was trying to stall reforms and new entrants in the telecom sector.

"A few COAI members fear fair and free competition, which is in favour of million of customers," an RCoM spokesperson said in a statement, reacting to COAI's demand that all pending applications for spectrum be considered before taking up RCoM's request for GSM frequency.

Earlier in the day, COAI had stated that RCoM's request for GSM spectrum is nothing but a application for a brand new GSM license and thus be looked into only after considering 575 new applications and pending requests by existing operators.

Reliance said Department of Telecom's affidavit in telecom tribunal TDSAT yesterday confirmed that RCoM was at the lowest in priority list after existing operators and licensees for spectrum allocation.

"COAI is deliberately confusing and recycling rejected issues and arguments," RCoM said, adding COAI had reduced itself to a spokesperson of Bharti, Vodafone and Idea in the TDSAT and was not the representative of GSM industry.
