RCom gets licence to provide telecom services in Uganda

Anil Ambani group firm Reliance Communications Ltd is understood to have acquired a licence for providing mobile services in Uganda.

NEW DELHI: Anil Ambani group firm Reliance Communications Ltd is understood to have acquired a licence for providing mobile services in Uganda.

The roll out of services in the African nation would begin next year and involve an investment of about 200 million dollars, sources close to the development said.

When contacted, RCom officials declined to comment. Sources said the licence covers basic as well as national and international services. To start with, the company would start mobile operations under the GSM technology platform.

Another group company Flag Telecom would provide the undersea cable connection to link the African nation with the rest of the world. The current level of telecom penetration in Uganda is around nine per cent.
