RCL to use FLAG for media transmission

Anil Ambani-managed Reliance Communications (RCL) is, for the first time, planning to undertake global delivery of broadcast signals and diverse media content.

KOLKATA: Anil Ambani-managed Reliance Communications (RCL) is, for the first time, planning to undertake global delivery of broadcast signals and diverse media content.

The company proposes to do so by using its wholly-owned global subsidiary FLAG Telecom’s fibre-optic networks, which connects key metropolitan centres spanning four continents.

The decision is in step with Reliance-ADAG’s strategic bid to position fibre-optic networks as a viable and cheaper alternative to traditional satellite-based global delivery of broadcast signals.

The move comes at a stage when overseas broadcasters and media firms have successfully tested fibre-based intercontinental delivery of footage of pre-planned sporting events like World Cup Football or Formula One Grand Prix.

Mum’s the word on RCL’s game-plan to address the video and content transmission needs of the world’s top broadcast and media companies. But senior officials at RCL and FLAG, it is learnt, are in talks with a clutch of foreign broadcasters to drive home the capacity and cost-linked advantages of fibre-optic networks, especially to long-term international sporting events.

RCL’s strategic discussions come at a stage when there’s been a visible rise in levels of overseas filming coupled with migration to electronic distribution of content in preference to physical haulage by road and air.

When contacted, an RCL official told ET, “Reliance Communications continuously looks to leverage its fibre-optic infrastructure and enhance business avenues by extending its bouquet of services to fast-growth sectors, including the media and broadcast segments.”

“RCL’s FLAG network offers a number of capabilities that can meet the video/content transmission needs of the world’s broadcast and media communities,” he added.

FLAG Telecom runs the world’s largest next-gen, IP-enabled connectivity network, comprising over 1,50,000 km of fibre-optic cable systems connecting India, US, Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific region.

But despite all the buzz about the possible emergence of fibre-optic networks as a viable alternative, industry circles admit that satellite still remains the ideal medium to transport for short-term broadcasts.
