Ray of hope for new GSM licence applicants
The government on Thursday said new telecom licences to nearly 575 applicants would be issued as per the existing policy - a commitment that lends hope to those aspiring to enter the GSM mobile telephony business.
"The government has decided to grant new Unified Access Services (UAS) licenses as per the existing policy," Minister of State for Communication Shakeel Ahmad informed Rajya Sabha.
In the last two years, the government has issued more than 50 licenses or LoIs under the existing guidelines. It had received nearly 575 applications from 46 companies for new telephony licenses after it announced a cut-off date of October 1 for receiving applications.
The companies who have applied for new licenses include, AT&T, Bycell Telecom, Datacom Solutions, HFCL, Idea Cellular, Shyam Telelink, Spice Communications, Parsvnath Developers, DLF and Unitech Limited.
Earlier, some of the applicants had asked the government to issue Letters of Intent immediately, while threatening to explore legal action in case of delays.
The beneficiaries of the existing policy include Aircel Ltd, Bharti Airtel, Dishnet Wireless, Essar Spacetel, Idea, Vodafone-Essar, Tata Teleservices and Aditya Birla Telecom.
While most of them have been alloted spectrum, some others are waiting for the frequency in some circles.
