PGCIL to offer bandwidth; gets LoI for NLD licence
Having laid nearly 20,000 kms of fibre backbone along with its transmission lines, state-owned Power Grid Corporation has procured the Letter of Intent for National Long Distance telecom license and plans to offer bandwidth on lease.
"We are providing bandwidth to various consumers... Although prices have come down significantly, we are likely to breakeven by 2008-09," PGCIL CMD R P Singh told reporters.
Asked whether they would start offering long distance (STD) services in the country, officials said no final decision had yet been taken but they would be selling the bandwidth to other long distance operators as well as agencies and government departments like defence ministry.
Department of Telecom (DoT) has already issued a letter of intent to PGCIL recently.
As of now PGCIL has Rs 100 crore worth contracts in hand for bandwidth selling.
The PSU had spent over Rs 900 crore for setting up the fibre network.
PGCIL has connectivity in all metros and major cities but its marked presence in remote areas like North Eastern region, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh makes PGCIL's network precious as not many operators have reached there.
In terms of revenue, PGCIL has set an ambitious target of Rs 180 crore by 2009-10 from Rs 40 crore last year.
On future investments, officials said there were no plans to pump in more money.
