Panasonic mulls second entry into Indian mobile market

Consumer durables maker Panasonic India is mulling its second innings in India's mobile handset space, the world's third largest market after the US and China.

NEW DELHI: Consumer durables maker Panasonic India is mulling its second innings in India's mobile handset space, the world's third largest market after the US and China.

The company would launch its latest 3G enabled GSM phones in India by mid next year.

"The Indian market for mobile handsets is growing exponentially and to tap this market, we would launch our range of cellphones by mid next year," Panasonic India Chief Operating Officer Chander Mohan said.

He said the company would import handsets for the Indian market from its global manufacturing centres in Japan, China or Indonesia.

Panasonic had exited the Indian mobile handset market in 2006 after it failed to woo customers with its range of products. The company had appointed Bipasha Basu as its brand ambassador and was the first to introduce compact handsets here.
