Overuse of SMS, CUG leads to network congestion

COIMBATORE: Unnecessary use of Closed User Group service and overuse of short messaging service were the main reasons for congestion in the mobile network, a senior Airtel official claimed on Friday.

CUG subscribers were using mobile phones, even while at a distance of 15 feet in their office and such unregulated use, which can be avoided, caused congestion in the network, P Swaminathan, CEO, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Mobility, Tamil Nadu, told reporters here.

Another reason for congestion was increasing numbers of SMS, mostly free, particularly sent by youths, even from the rural areas throughout the day, Swaminathan said.

SMS entries in television contests also contributed to the congestion of the entire network, during evening and night hours, he said.

It was necessary to impose self-regulation with regard to such use, Swaminathan said, adding his company has increased SMS capacity in the last one year, as it started receiving 3,500 messages per second now, as against 700 in 2005.

Announcing the network expansions for Tamil Nadu, he said that the cell site count would go up from 2,400 from Mar 2006 to over 4,500, coverage in urban towns from 550 to 800 and rural coverage from 10,000 villages to 15,000 by March 2007.
