Onida reworking on mobile phone business: CMD Gulu Mirchandani

CHENNAI: After facing stiff competition for its mobile phone business, MIRC Electronics is reworking its mobile phone strategy, a top company official said today.

"We are reworking on our mobile phone strategy. We are moving in to smart phone business", MIRC Electronics Chairman and Managing Director Gulu Mirchandani told reporters here.

MIRC manufacturers home appliances under the ONIDA brand. "Earlier we had around 10-12 models and about eight of them were feature phones. We are focusing on smartphones in the sub Rs 10,000 segment", Mirchandani said, after launching the company's new range of air conditioners.

Though the company was having around six to seven per cent market share in Gujarat mobile phone market, he said the decision to focus more on smartphone business was due to the growing smartphone industry.

"That (sub Rs 10,000 smartphone) market offers huge potential for us", he said.

While air conditioners and flat panels were the flagship products for MIRC Electronics, he said the revenues from mobile phone division was around six to seven per cent.
