Nokia project to provide market info to farmers

BHOPAL: Nokia has launched pilot projects to test the viability of providing market information to farmers on their handsets through the use of GPRS technology.

Under the projects, introduced in select villages of the country, the company would provide information like rates of various crops in wholesale markets, Nokia India Product Head (mobile phones) Raghuvansh Sarup told reporters.

"Though we are yet to go public with details of the experiment, the project was on in several villages across the country and we expect good results," he said.

GPRS technology is used in sending MMS and searching the web on mobile phones.

The project was gaining momentum as customers have to pay Rs 10-Rs 50, much below the cost incurred on regular subscription of the newspaper, Sarup claimed.

Meanwhile, the official said Nokia is adding over 400 new mobile customers every month in Madhya Pradesh. He also lauded the state government's plan to utilise mobile phones for administrative purposes.

Sarup said remoteness and geographical conditions had prevented entry of telephones in several villages of MP. Nokia will actively take part in developing wireless villages or last-mile connectivity in the state, he added.
