MTNL's broadband waitlist now at 10,000

NEW DELHI: Now there is a waiting list for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd’s broadband connections. More than 10,000 MTNL fixedline subscribers are waiting for broadband connections in Delhi and Mumbai.
The PSU has close to 4,00,000 subscribers in the two cities. There are total 20 lakh broadband subscribers in the country and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and MTNL account for about 70% of the subscribers.
“We can install only between 500 and 700 conenctions in one day, while the demand is much more. Therefore, there is a waiting list for broadband connections,” said MTNL chairman and managing director RSP Sinha.
MTNL has over 2,10,000 broadband connections in Mumbai and over 1,80,000 connections in Delhi. Its total waiting list is 10,000. In Mumbai there is a waiting list of 8,000, while waiting list in Delhi is 2,000. According to telecom regulatory authority of India (Trai), 6,50,000 new broadband connections were added in the first eight months of the current financial year.
BSNL, another PSU, has exhausted over 90% of its existing broadband capacity of 1 million. The company is adding an additional 3 million capacity network. The additional capacity will be available from January, said director (planning) of BSNL R L Dube.
In most of these cities, there is a waiting list of these services. MTNL has also launched its IPTV services in the two metros.
