MTNL pays Rs 106 crore interim dividend to govt

State-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd has paid an interim dividend of Rs 106.31 crore on its paid-up equity capital to the government.

NEW DELHI: State-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd on Wednesday said it has paid an interim dividend of Rs 106.31 crore on its paid-up equity capital to the government.

"In its board meeting held on January 30, MTNL board approved payment of interim dividend 30 per cent on the paid up equity capital of Rs 630 crore for the financial year 2007-08," the telecom service provider of Delhi and Mumbai said in a statement.

Minister of Communications and IT A Raja, after receiving the dividend, said, "I congratulate MTNL for introducing latest technologies in their network, and it is very evident that they are moving in the right direction. MTNL has been playing a key role in stimulating the market dynamics by reducing tariffs and providing greater consumer benefits."

MTNL had paid 40 per cent dividend on its equity capital of Rs 630 crore during last year.

"During the last seven years (excluding 2007-08), Rs 1,921.50 crore has been paid as dividend to all the shareholders, out of which Rs 1,080.78 crore has been paid to the government on their shareholding of 56.25 per cent in the company," the statement said.

As of January 31, 2008, MTNL's customer base of voice services exceeded 68.7 lakh.
