PUNE: Farmer will now have an instant access to vital agricultural information on mobile phones through Reuters Market Light (RML) service launched in Maharashtra on Monday in the presence of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar.

The RML has been designed to support the agricultural community with up-to-date local and customised commodity pricing information, news and weather updates.

Tom Glocer, Reuters Chief Executive, said the innovative information service for the Indian farmer "reflects the tradition of the entity in promoting transparency and fairness in market operations around the world".

The pilot project was an "unequivocal success" and the launch of RML will signal a very important milestone for the Indian agricultural industry, he added.

Those present on the occasion included Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Balasaheb Thorat and State Agriculture Marketing Minister Harshawardhan Patil.
