Mangalam Birla writes to PM on dual tech by CDMA players

The government's decision to allow dual technology by a single operator in the same circle and raising the bar of existing subscribers for additional spectrum have irked the GSM players.

NEW DELHI: The government's decision to allow dual technology by a single operator in the same circle and raising the bar of existing subscribers for additional spectrum have irked the GSM players, with Kumar Mangalam Birla understood to be spearheading the protest.

Birla, whose Group offers GSM services under the brand Idea, is understood to have written a strong letter seeking the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

On the heels of strong protest by Cellular Operators Association of India(COAI), which, among others, has Bharti Airtel of Sunil Mittal as a member, Birla is believed to have questioned the Department of Telecom's decision to permit Reliance Communications and other CDMA players to offer GSM services.

No comments could be obtained from either the Birla spokesperson, COAI or the government on the protest letter of Kumar Mangalam Birla.

Pursuant to government decision to allow dual technology, RCOM today paid Rs 1,651 crore as requisite fee to enable the new faclity, a move that would hurt seriously the interests of existing GSM players such as Bharti, Vodafone and Idea.
