Kampanis meet Anil Ambani in L’Affaire Hutch?

Mr Kampani is also known to Mr Ambani for years and was involved in the demerger of the group.

MUMBAI:Nimesh Kampani, chairman of JM Morgan Stanley and his son Vishal Kampani met Reliance Communications (RCL) chairman Anil Ambani and Amitabh Jhunjhunwala around lunch time on Monday, at Reliance Centre, Ballard Estate in Mumbai. It is not clear what transpired at the meeting, but it assumes significance in the light of the battle for Hutch-Essar. Morgan Stanley is advising Essar on its financing options. But Mr Kampani is also known to Mr Ambani for years and was involved in the demerger of the group. A Reliance group spokesperson was not available for comment.

Meanwhile, five banks have agreed to lend up to $5 billion each to RCL for acquisitions in India and abroad. The agreement also covers the debt proposed to be raised for the Hutch-Essar bid. The banks are Citi, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, ABN-Amro and UBS. This means that Reliance has plans apart from the Hutch deal and signals its aggressive intentions.
