Govt imposes dumping duties on Chinese cellophane

The government is planning to impose anti-dumping duties on transparent cellophane film and paper from China.

NEW DELHI: The government is planning to impose anti-dumping duties on transparent cellophane film and paper from China. Importers of the Chinese cellophane would have to pay an additional duty of $1.91 per kg as it has been found that dumping was causing material injury to the domestic industry.

According to a notification issued by the directorate general of anti-dumping & allied duties, the imposition of anti-dumping duties would not restrict imports from China, and, therefore, would not affect the availability of the product to the consumers. Prices of the product, however, might go up. The proposed duty would become applicable once the revenue department notifies it.

The DGAD had announced the initiation of anti-dumping investigations on cellophane imported from China in September 2005. This followed an application from Kesoram Rayon on behalf of the domestic industry - representing a major proportion of the domestic production of the product.
