Government's ban on bulk SMSes, MMSes hits pre-paid users

Telecom companies lose: Rs 400 crore. But a part of this will be made up by an increase in call revenues.

To check spread of rumours which has led to exodus of north eastern people from certain states, government banned from today bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days across the country.

The decision was taken after reports of widespread circulation of SMSes and MMSes containing misleading information about Assam violence, threats to people of northeastern origin living in other parts of the country and doctored videos.

Impact of ban on telecom companies and users

Pre-paid users: 96% Of India’s 950 million mobile connections are pre-paid.

SMS Limit: 5 per day

MMS Limit: 5 per day, none over 25KB

…But Exempts

Post-paid users: Because telcos say it is impossible to extend ban in such a short duration.

Transactional SMSes: From banks, airlines, railways, brokerages, radio taxis, entertainment portals & multiplex chains.

For how long: 15 days (Aug 18-Sept 2)

How to bypass ban: Use free text apps like WhatsApp, BlackBerry messenger and Nimbuzz.
