Four million Net-enabled handsets sold every month
Indian Cellular Association president Pankaj Mohindroo points out that of the 7-8 million handsets sold in the country every month, over four million are Internet-enabled.
A senior executive with another leading operator pointed out that the introduction of 3G services would lead to an instant addition of 10 million Net-users-on the-phones.
According to a CTO of a leading mobile operator, the sudden surge in the number of people using their handsets to access the Web can be explained by the fact that most value-added services such as ringtone and other downloads and instant messaging are now being accessed over internet protocol. Analysts say handsets are also evolving to substitute the PC to some extent.
"More and more people are going to use their handsets to access the internet, especially for simple functions like checking their e-mails. This trend would be helped by the fact that mobile handsets are becoming more feature-packed and increasing their processing power," said Gartner client computing principal analyst Diptarup Chakraborti.
