Ensure transparency in SMS plans: TRAI

TRAI on Friday asked service providers to ensure transparency while charging for messages under various plans and packs on 'SMS Blackout days' -- social, cultural and festival days.

NEW DELHI: Telecom operator TRAI on Friday asked service providers to ensure transparency while charging for messages under various plans and packs on 'SMS Blackout days' -- social, cultural and festival days.

Telecom operators, which offer free or discounted SMS schemes as part of regular tariff plans or as packs valid for specified period as promotional schemes, had reported to TRAI that SMSs under such schemes would not be available to users on certain specified days, the regulator said in a statement.

Such specified days happen to be social, cutural/ festival days, TRAI said, adding the operators would have to clearly indicate such days in the package itself.

The regulator said service providers would have to convey the SMS charges on such special days to the subscribers.

The dates corresponding to the blackout day would not be changed and there cannot be any addition to the list of such days after the pack is subscribed by the customer, TRAI said.
