DoT to vacate spectrum from non-telecom users

Ahead of its submission of recommendations on the 3G spectrum, TRAI has sought vacation of spectrum by non-telecom users like IOC, Railways and Rajasthan Atomic Power Corporation to make it available for the telecom companies.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of its submission of recommendations on the 3G spectrum, TRAI has sought vacation of spectrum by non-telecom users like IOC, Railways and Rajasthan Atomic Power Corporation to make it available for the telecom companies.
In a letter to Department of Telecom on August 8, the telecom regulator said the spectrum is in the 824-864 Mhz band paired with 869-889 MHz, which is allocated for CDMA operators.
This spectrum was being used by non-telecom users and was allocated prior to NFAP (National Frequency Allocation Plan) - 2002. Most of these non-telecom users have since then shifted to other mediums like Optic fiber and have retained the spectrum for back-up purposes.
"In view of the exponential growth of mobile services in the country, its imperative that sufficient spectrum is made available to telecom operators for sustaining the growth and providing quality of services to their subscribers," the letter said.
TRAI has stated that the following non-telecom users need to vacate spectrum in 800 mhz band.
Acording to the regulator, oil PSU Indian Oil Corporation has 6 MhZ in Gujarat, Railways has 3 mhz in Kolkata and West Bengal, Rajasthan Atomic Power station has 2.6 Mhz in Kota.
