DoT seeks nod to fine Bharti Airtel

DoT seeks telecom minister's approval to fine Bharti Airtel for putting up two towers within a distance of 10 km of international border with Nepal.

NEW DELHI: The department of telecom (DoT) has sought telecom minister A Raja’s approval to fine Bharti Airtel Rs 50 crore for putting up two towers within a distance of 10 km of international border with Nepal in Bihar service area, as this was a violation of licence agreement.

While the condition of distance between two towers was relaxed to 500 metres along the international border with effect from February 26 this year, the DoT is of the view that Bharti had violated licence agreement as per the conditions that existed at the time of vigilance check.
