DoT seeks details from Rel Comm on GSM plans

The Department of Telecom has sought more details from Reliance Communications on its nationwide GSM cellular network roll-out plans, for which the Anil Ambani Group company has sought spectrum.

NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecom has sought more details from Reliance Communications on its nationwide GSM cellular network roll-out plans, for which the Anil Ambani Group company has sought spectrum.

"They have sought spectrum wherever it is available in the country. We have written to them to indicate their plans so that we can take a decision," sources said.

The sources added that Reliance Communications, which operates cellular services throughout the country using CDMA technology, might have to vacate some existing spectrum if it wants additional spectrum in the GSM space.

"Our understanding is that they might completely switch over to GSM based mobile services and exit CDMA," sources added.

Country's leading operator Reliance Communications with its nearly two crore CDMA based mobile subscribers was one of the most committed CDMA players of the two major CDMA players in the country, the Tatas being the other player.

Recently Reliance Communications has approached the Government seeking spectrum in 1800 MHz frequency to start GSM services in the country.

If the application of Reliance is considered favourably, the company would immediately get a pair of 5 Mhz of spectrum in 1800 Mhz (a frequency for GSM operators).

Reliance Telecom, a subsidiary of Reliance Communications, has been offering GSM-based services in six circles including Kolkata, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar and North-East while the parent company operates CDMA services in these circles as well as rest of India.
