Delhiites may soon get traffic alerts via SMS
The Delhi government is planning to install a hi-tech traffic information system (TIS) that will alert commuters about jams and help them avoid traffic snarls.
A similar system is already in place in Bangalore. "The government is in talks to introduce a TIS, which would help ease traffic woes. Modernisation of the transport system assumes importance in the Capital as a large number of new automobiles are being added," a Delhi government source said.
The proposed TIS system has been designed by Bangalore-based Mapunity Information Services. "The Delhi government has evinced interest in our system," said Mapunity CEO and co-founder Ashwin Mahesh. TIS for Bangalore was built by the company on the global information system (GIS) platform.
The TIS measures traffic density by locating the number of mobile phones on a particular stretch. Cell phones act as proxy vehicles. Mapunity has a tie-up with Airtel and all users of the service would show up on the TIS map. Users of the mobile service provider act as representative samples.
"Airtel's consumer base is sufficient to fairly reproduce the traffic situation. To track the traffic movement at the granular level, we have installed micro towers at street junctions and along roads. Bangalore has 150 such towers," said Mr Mahesh.
