Highlights
NEW DELHI: For private telecom players, Delhi and Mumbai continue to be the two largest revenue generators. According to latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), one of the two metros is the top revenue earner for all leading private telcos.
If Delhi is the top market for Bharti Airtel, Mumbai leads the pack for Reliance Communications RCL), Hutch Essar (HEL) and Tata Teleservcies. Consider the figures: for the quarter-ended September, 06, Mumbai with Rs 270.2 crore and Delhi with Rs 252.23 crore were the top revenue earning circles for RCL, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat. RCL also earned Rs 972.67 crore from national and international long-distance services during this quarter, Trai said.
Similarly, for Bharti Airtel, Delhi (Rs 682.82 crore) was its most commercially rewarding circle during this period. However, here Karnataka (Rs 513.19 cr), Andhra Pradesh (Rs 318.69 crore) and Punjab at Rs 269.7 cr account for the next three slots ahead of Mumbai where the company earned a gross revenue of only Rs 189.56 crore during this period.
Again, for HEL, Mumbai is its top circle at Rs 456.45 crore during this period, followed by Gujarat, Delhi, UP (East) and Karnataka. Mumbai is the top circle for the Tatas too. In fact, it is the only circle where Tata Teleservices has earned more than Rs 200 crore during this period.
The only exception to the two-metro domination is Idea Cellular, where Maharashtra (Rs 236.64 crore) is its top circle, followed by Delhi and Andhra Pradesh. Idea does not have operations in Mumbai.
