BSNL gets notice for denying MNP

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked state-run BSNL to explain why it denied number portability to over 57,000 subscribers in January this year in violation of norms set out two years ago to enable mobile phone users to switch service providers. It has asked BSNL to reply within seven days, failing which it will impose a fine of Rs 5,000 for each violation. A copy of the Trai notice was reviewed by ET.

As per Trai norms, an operator must inform the MNP provider when it shuts down services to any mobile phone user after the user puts in a request to move to another carrier.
