Blackberry imbroglio to be resolved soon, says govt

Government on Saturday said the BlackBerry controversy would be resolved soon after addressing all concerns raised by security agencies.

NEW DELHI: Government on Saturday said the BlackBerry controversy would be resolved soon after addressing all concerns raised by security agencies.

"Solving the issue of BlackBerry is high on our agenda as Telecom Minister A Raja has already said. We are confident of reaching a solution among Department of Telecom, RIM (Blackberry vendor) and security agencies next month and we assure you that consumers' interest and security concerns will be taken care of and it will be business as usual," Minister of State for Telecom J Scindia said here.

Raja had said yesterday that Canada based Research-In- Motion (RIM) has promised to provide monitoring system to DoT within a month.

The BlackBerry issue came to fore after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence expressed inability to intercept any conversation between hawala dealers and militant groups that use BlackBerry sets.

The security agencies have also been saying that they need to have lawful interception of information on BlackBerry services.

According to official estimates there are over one lakh BlackBerry subscribers but the operators claim to be having a customer base of nearly four lakh.
