Bharti Wal-Mart's plans on track despite gloom

Bharti Wal-Mart is not going slow on its retail plans in the country despite the global economic slowdown.

CHANDIGARH: Bharti Wal-Mart is not going slow on its retail plans in the country despite the global economic slowdown. The retailer is going ahead with its plans to set up 14 carry-and-carry centres in various states in six-seven years. The current liquidity crunch and high interest rates are not going to hurt Bharti Wal-Marts retail expansion in the country, Bharti Wal-Mart CEO Raj Jain told ET.

The company has begun membership drive for bonafide business owners in Punjab for self-service cash-and-carry stores, he said.

Bharti Wal-Marts cash-and-carry centres would sell 6,000 to 10,000 food and non-food products, allowing retailers and businessmen to increase their efficiency and lower cost of operations. Over 90% of these goods and services would be sourced locally thereby keeping the costs to a minimum. Each cash-and-carry store would provide direct employment to 170 people.

The company is installing business-to-business JV between Bharti Enterprises and Wal-Mart for wholesale cash-and-carry operations and back-end supply chain management to serve small retailers, manufacturers and farmers.

These centres would cover around 3-5 acres, Mr Jain said. The centres would supply to different retail chains along with Bharti Enterprises retail outlet, he added. Bharti Wal-Mart has set up a distribution centre at Banur which would cover 100-150 km.
