Bharti Airtel submits final bid for Myanmar telecom licence

Indian telecom bellwether Bharti AirtelBSE 1.27 %, along with consortium partners, has submitted its final technical bid for a telecom licence in Myanmar.

MUMBAI: Indian telecom bellwether Bharti AirtelBSE 1.27 %, along with consortium partners, has submitted its final technical bid for a telecom licence in Myanmar, said a company spokesman.

Bharti, that already has operations in Africa, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh outside of India, is one among 11 bidders.

Myanmar, an untapped mobile market, had called bids for two mobile licences and short-listed 12 international consortia. Vodafone and China Mobile dropped out of the race last week.

Other shortlisted companies include Axiata Group; Digicel; France Telecom-Orange and Marubeni; KDDI, Sumitomo, Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Development Corp. and A1 Construction; Millicom International Cellular; MTN Consortium; Qatar Telecom; Singtel, KBZ and Myanmar Telephone Co; Telenor; Viettel Group.

A winner is expected to be declared by June 27 this year.
