AT&T plans to re-enter cellular space in India
AT&T’s global CEO Randall Stephenson on Friday met department of telecom secretary DS Mathur and is learnt to have discussed the company’s plans to re-enter the cellular space in India.
Sources said that Mr Stephenson told Mr Mathur that AT&T was interested in bidding for 3G spectrum when the Indian government would auction this resource and was also looking at taking a wireless licence in India.
AT&T had exited the Indian mobile market in July 2005, when it sold its equity in Idea Cellular to the Tatas and the Aditya Birla group. The company currently offers national and international long distance operations in India.
