AT4 to set up lab for wireless tech

AT4 Wireless, formerly CETECOM Spain, has expressed interest in setting up a certification lab for wireless technologies such as Wimax, Bluetooth and 2G, in partnership with the department of telecommunications (DoT).

NEW DELHI: AT4 Wireless, formerly CETECOM Spain, has expressed interest in setting up a certification lab for wireless technologies such as Wimax, Bluetooth and 2G, in partnership with the department of telecommunications (DoT). “The nature of the partnership is being worked out and a committee has been set up for this purpose. The initial investment is expected to cost $2million -$5 million, going up to $10 million in the next couple of years,” DoT sources said.

The proposal was mooted on the sidelines of the WiMax Forum member conference held in Madrid, end June. The conference saw a high-power delegation from the Indian telecom industry and government, headed by telecom secretary DS Mathur, attending it and a special India session being held. “Since India is introducing technologies such as WiMax, it was suggested that we partner with AT4 rather than go it alone. We also don’t see much point in reinventing the wheel when AT4 has taken the lead in certification of wireless technologies,” a DoT official said.

The Indian delegation got an extensive look of the work being done at AT4’s lab in Malaga, Spain, and would like to make use of AT4’s expertise in the “full spectrum of wireless access, including WiMax, 2G and Bluetooth.” In the area of WiMax, having the certification laboratory here would mean that the equipment would be standardised no matter which vendor it came from. “That will bring down prices of the handset and will make mass production by multiple vendors much easier,” the DoT sources said.
