Airtel plans to increase the number of Internet users through its GPRS (General Package Radio Service) by offering better concessions, a top company official said here on Wednesday.


MADURAI: Airtel plans to increase the number of Internet users through its GPRS (General Package Radio Service) by offering better concessions, a top company official said here on Wednesday.

P Swaminathan, CEO of Bharti Airtel Ltd, told reporters that at present only 3-4 per cent of its customers used internet facility. "If more concession is given we can expect more subscribers."

He also ruled out the possibility of installing jammers near prisons, as it would affect the general mobile users. It was the duty of the prison staff to ensure that prisoners did not use mobile phones inside the prisons, he said.

Airtel would be able to launch fixed wireless phone in a week's time and it could used to send SMS etc. The potential for the same was huge, he said.

Announcing the company's mega plans to further expand its fast growing mobile network in Tamil Nadu, he said the number of cell sites would be increased from the present 2,400 to 4,500 before March 2007.Besides 800 towns, and 15,000 villages would be covered in Tamil Nadu, and SMS capacity would be increased from 3,500 per second to 4,500 per second before 2007.

Claiming that Airtel's Tamil voice portal and Tamil SMS were becoming popular, he said the portal would be introduced to 50 more sites shortly. All the outgoing and incoming calls within four southern states had been slashed to Rs 2 per minute.
